Nuclear Electric
Nuclear electric propulsion is the subject of a new (2026) NASA program for a 20 kW nuclear reactor (Space Reactor SR-1 Freedom) with ion propulsion for Mars and further exploration. The project is to transport three Ingenuity class helicopters to Mars for 2028. The electric portion of nuclear electric systems is under the purview of the Electric Propulsion Technical Comittee of the AIAA.
